Thomas Birbacher

Physics $ \mapsto $ Hardware

I work on the LIFE Space Mission with the Exoplanets & Habitability group at ETH Zürich, building a telescope to search for signs of life around nearby Earth-like planets. I develop laser measurement systems to stabilize the prototype instrument to the nanometer level.

Beside that, I like to learn about and tinker with hardware and software of all kinds, from analog signal chains and FPGAs to automatic optical alignment, from manual machining and hand-wound motors to telescope mounts. You may also find me hiking in the Swiss mountains or floating in the Limmat.
