Thomas Birbacher

Physics $ \mapsto $ Hardware

Thomas works on the LIFE Space Mission with the Exoplanets & Habitability group at ETH Zürich, building a telescope to search for signs of life around nearby Earth-like planets. He develops laser measurement systems to stabilize the prototype instrument to the nanometer level.

Beside that, he likes to learn about and tinker with hardware and software of all kinds, from analog signal chains and FPGAs to automatic optical alignment, from manual machining and hand-wound motors to telescope mounts. You may also find him hiking in the Swiss mountains or floating in the Limmat.
